Patrons are encouraged to explore our online services, including Ask-A-Librarian, INSPIRE, and our Digital Collections.

Although the Indiana State Library was originally created to serve legislators and state officials, its scope has expanded over the years to meet new needs and changing conditions. The library continues to acquire books, serials, and specialized materials for state departments, while also serving as the custodian of public records that are no longer in active use.

With additional storage capacity planned, the library will be able to properly preserve state archives and accept local records from towns and counties, as permitted by law.

The library’s administrative and cataloging divisions support operations behind the scenes, while its service divisions reference, lending, Indiana history, and extension ensure that Hoosiers have access to information, research support, and statewide library resources.
